What does “J is for Jerry Can” mean?

I had to come up with a cutesy name for my blog. When I thought about what characterizes my time in Rwanda, the two biggest things that came to mind were: teaching young children (of course) and fetching water, since the watering hole is the hub of activity in the area. All of the sudden I heard in my head the phrase I said so many times when teaching the children to read: “H is for happy, I is for inside, J is for Jerry Can.” And for all of us so accustomed to filling up those handy little yellow jerry cans with water and carrying them back to school on our heads, it was very fitting.
